Jazz Up Your Protein Shake

We all want to eat healthy, but our busy lives can get in the way of preparing fresh, nutritious meals.  This is where the protein shake comes in!  As one of your go-to quick meals or snacks, does your protein shake need some jazzing up? I like whey protein myself, but there is soy, pea, hemp and other protein sources out there.  I also like my protein shake to be low carb and high fiber.  Here are a few combinations of ingredients that I enjoy.  (I don’t call them recipes because I never measure!)  The following are suggested amounts you can mix with your favorite vanilla protein powder and ice.  You should definitely  experiment and prepare what tastes best to you!

Chocolate Almond Shake
1 cup almond milk
1 – 2 TB almond butter
1 TB cocoa powder
(also good with added 1/2 frozen banana and/or 1/2 tsp cinnamon)

Tropical Smoothie
1/2 cup orange pineapple juice
1/2 cup filtered water
1/2 frozen banana
(a sprinkle of nutmeg on top is delish)

Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake
1 cup your favorite milk
1 – 2 TB peanut butter
1 TB cocoa powder
(1/2 frozen banana is a yummy addition)

Berry Smoothie
1 cup your favorite milk or filtered water
1 cup blueberries or strawberries or any combination of berries

Coconut Almond Shake
1 cup coconut milk
1 – 2 TB almond butter
(add 1/2 frozen banana and/or cocoa powder for variety)

These are just a few of the many different healthy (and tasty) ingredients you can include. I like cocoa powder because it gives me that great chocolate flavor with no fat and a good amount of fiber. Don’t forget to buy organic and fair trade. Bananas are great in any shake, in my opinion, because they add vitamins, creaminess and natural sweetness. Other natural sweeteners to try: real maple syrup, real honey and stevia. Ground flaxseeds are also good in any shake to add healthy oils, fiber and protein.
